Apple Intelligence is Apple's integrated system of generative artificial intelligence features for the iPhone, iPad and Mac, announced at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2024 and released from October 2024 onward. It embeds AI capabilities — writing assistance, notification summaries, image generation and a substantially upgraded Siri — directly into Apple's operating systems, and is architecturally distinctive for processing most requests on the device itself and routing only more demanding tasks to a cloud layer Apple calls Private Cloud Compute.[1]

Apple announced Apple Intelligence in June 2024 alongside iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. The first features arrived with iOS 18.1 in October 2024 in United States English, with additional English localisations in December 2024 and a broader expansion in 2025 to major world languages including Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Vietnamese. In China, where the standard cloud services are not offered, Apple announced a partnership with Alibaba in early 2025 to deliver AI features through locally operated models. Apple also delayed the European Union rollout over regulatory uncertainty linked to the bloc's Digital Markets Act before making features available there in 2025. Apple Intelligence is built on a tiered architecture. A set of on-device foundation models — language and image models small enough to run efficiently on Apple silicon — handle most requests, which never leave the device. Tasks that exceed on-device capability are sent to Private Cloud Compute, a server platform Apple designed so that data is used only for the immediate request, is not stored or logged, and cannot be accessed by Apple itself; Apple published the system's security design and invited independent researchers to verify it. The user-facing features span the operating systems. Writing Tools rewrite, summarise and proofread text across applications; notification and mail summaries condense incoming content; Clean Up removes unwanted objects from photos; Image Playground and Genmoji generate images and custom emoji from descriptions; and Siri is rebuilt to understand language more naturally, maintain context across requests and take actions inside apps. Apple also integrated third-party chatbots — beginning with OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2024 — as an optional extension when users want capabilities beyond Apple's own models. Apple Intelligence represents the largest-scale deployment of on-device generative AI to consumers: hundreds of millions of devices gained native AI features without a separate subscription, in contrast to the paid AI tiers offered by some competitors. For developers, Apple's expanding set of AI-related frameworks and app-intent interfaces creates new ways to make applications controllable by Siri and other system AI.
