v0 is an artificial intelligence application development platform created by Vercel, the cloud computing company behind the Next.js web framework. First released in October 2023 as a "generative UI" tool that turned text and image prompts into React interface components, v0 was rebuilt in 2026 into a full-stack, agent-oriented app builder in which users describe software in natural language and receive working, deployable code.[1][2]
v0 is one of the best-known products in the vibe coding category — tools that let non-specialists and professionals alike build software through conversation rather than manual programming. It competes with products such as Lovable, Bolt.new, Replit Agent, Cursor and Anthropic's Claude Code, and by early 2026 Vercel reported that more than four million people had used the platform since its general availability.[2][5]
History
v0 was created by Vercel, a cloud platform company founded in 2015 and renamed from ZEIT in 2020, whose Next.js framework became one of the most widely used toolkits for building web applications in JavaScript and TypeScript. Vercel positioned itself as the "AI Cloud" for front-end development and, on 30 September 2025, announced a US$300 million Series F funding round at a post-money valuation of US$9.3 billion.[3]
The first version of v0 launched as v0.dev in October 2023. It generated React code based on shadcn/ui components and Tailwind CSS styling, allowing a user to describe an interface and receive editable, paste-ready components. This "generative UI" approach was among the earliest practical demonstrations of prompt-driven software creation and made v0 a reference point for the emerging vibe coding movement.[1]
v0 became generally available in 2024 and grew rapidly among product managers, designers and marketing teams who used it for prototypes, landing pages and internal tools. By early 2026 the service had moved to the v0.app domain[4] and Vercel announced a ground-up rebuild — marketed as "the new v0" on 3 February 2026 — aimed at turning the tool from a prototyping novelty into infrastructure for production software and autonomous agents.[2][5]

v0's core capability is prompt-to-code generation. A user describes the application or interface they want, and the system produces standard React and Next.js code using Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui, with no proprietary runtime or vendor lock-in in the generated output. The rebuilt platform added a sandbox-based runtime that can import any GitHub repository and automatically pull environment variables and configurations from Vercel, so that prompts generate production-ready code inside a real build environment rather than an isolated demo. A Git panel lets users create a branch for each chat, open pull requests against the main branch, and deploy on merge, bringing non-engineers into standard version-control workflows with pull requests treated as first-class objects. Database connections and enterprise-grade security controls — including auditability intended to address the "shadow IT" risks of unsanctioned AI-generated software — form part of the same release.[2]
Commercially, v0 is sold through subscription tiers with usage-based billing; in February 2026 Vercel moved the product to token-based pricing, with a free tier, individual premium plan, shared team plans and custom enterprise agreements, and access to the platform programmatically through the v0 API.[5]

v0 is used across the software lifecycle: designers work against real code, product leaders turn specifications into prototypes and pull requests, marketing teams edit production pages, data teams ship dashboards, and engineers unblock colleagues without granting full repository access. Vercel has framed the platform's purpose as closing the gap between easily generated demos and software that survives production, a critique of early vibe coding practice in which AI-generated code was frequently abandoned or rewritten before release.[2]
The platform's rise reflects a broader shift in software development during 2025 and 2026, in which conversational AI builders — including v0, Lovable, Bolt.new, Replit Agent and Windsurf — compressed the time required to produce working web applications and expanded the population of people who can create software. This has also generated debate about code quality, security vulnerabilities, credential handling and long-term maintainability, concerns that vendors have answered with sandboxing, review workflows and enterprise governance features.[2][5]
