xAI

xAI is an American artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk in March 2023 with the stated mission of understanding "the true nature of the universe." The company develops the Grok family of large language models, operates one of the world's largest AI supercomputers, and since March 2025 has owned the X social media platform (formerly Twitter), which serves as its primary distribution channel.^[1]

xAI emerged during the post-ChatGPT wave of frontier AI investment and has become one of the most heavily capitalised private AI companies in the world, with reported valuations rising from US$24 billion in mid-2024 to more than US$200 billion by 2026. The company's strategy differs from rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic in its tight coupling between an AI laboratory, a social network with more than 600 million monthly users, and a self-built supercomputing infrastructure.^[2]

History

xAI was incorporated as X.AI Corp in Nevada in March 2023 by Musk together with researchers recruited from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Microsoft Research, Tesla and other organisations. The company's first product, the Grok-1 large language model, was released in November 2023 to subscribers of X Premium, the paid tier of the social platform.^[1]

The company raised US$6 billion in a Series B round in May 2024 at a reported valuation of US$24 billion, followed by a further US$6 billion Series C in December 2024 at a reported US$50 billion valuation. In parallel, xAI built the Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, bringing 100,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs online in a compressed construction schedule in late 2024 and later expanding the cluster toward 200,000 accelerators, making it one of the largest AI training installations in the world.^[2]

On 28 March 2025 xAI acquired X Corp, the owner of the X platform, in an all-stock transaction reported to value xAI at about US$80 billion and X at about US$33 billion including debt, creating the combined entity X.AI Holdings Corp. The merger gave xAI direct access to the platform's user base and its real-time stream of public posts, which the company uses both for model training data and for product distribution. Further reported financing rounds followed — about US$10 billion at a roughly US$200 billion valuation in September 2025 and a US$20 billion Series E at roughly US$230 billion in early 2026 — and by mid-2026 media reports described an all-stock combination with Musk's space company SpaceX that would make xAI a subsidiary of a combined enterprise.^[3]

Key Technologies

The company's principal product family is Grok, a series of large language models with multimodal and reasoning capabilities. Grok 3, released on 17 February 2025, was trained on the Colossus cluster with roughly ten times the compute of its predecessor and introduced separate reasoning and "mini" variants.^[4]

xAI also operates Colossus, a custom-built supercomputer that serves both training and inference workloads. The cluster's scale lets the company train frontier-scale models without relying on third-party cloud capacity, an approach Musk has described as a strategic advantage in both cost and control.^[2]

In late 2024 xAI opened a commercial developer API, allowing businesses to integrate Grok models into their own applications on a usage-based pricing model. The company has also embedded Grok across the X platform, including free access tiers for X users and integration into subscription products, creating one of the largest direct consumer distribution networks for an AI model family.^[1]

Applications and Impact

Grok is used by consumers through X for chat, image generation and real-time question answering grounded in the platform's live content stream. Enterprises use the xAI API for customer support, content generation, coding assistance and agentic workflows, competing in the same market segment as OpenAI's ChatGPT API, Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini.^[3]

The company's combination of social data, supercomputing and aggressive pricing has intensified competitive pressure across the frontier AI industry, and its rapid cluster build-outs have made xAI a major purchaser of data-centre infrastructure and a reference point in debates about AI energy consumption. As with other frontier models, Grok's image-generation and conversational capabilities have also raised concerns about misinformation, deepfakes and the moderation of political content on X.^[2]
